East Durham Children’s Initiative

EDCI's Mission is to create a pipeline of high-quality services from birth through high school graduation for children and families living in a 120-block area of East Durham. With this mission, they were founded in 2008 and have been growing ever since. Since the start of working with partners and the community in 2010, they have achieved their hefty goal of engaging over 700 families and 1,300 children. The highlight of 2012 was when David Reese, the first executive director, and 14 elementary schoolers had the opportunity to meet former First Lady Michelle Obama. EDCI is the home of two hives that Bee Downtown uses to incorporate into the curriculum for the children throughout the year so they can learn more about their pollinators. We had so much fun this spring suiting up some elementary schoolers in bee suits and educating them about honeybees! Check out their website for ways to get involved.
